Transfer of SUMEX MOOC to EIT RawMaterials Academy
Our online training course has been well-received, and we’re delighted to announce its continuation. Starting in early November, the course will be transferred to the EIT RawMaterials Academy, ensuring a seamless transition.

On 5 September 2023, SUMEX joined forces with two other EU-funded projects, CIRAN and Re-sourcing, to co-organise the high-level panel discussion “Balancing minerals extraction and nature protection: The implications of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act for Europe’s energy transition” during the World Resources Forum 2023 which garnered significant interest, with a participation of over 220 persons.

The SUMEX project team is happy to announce our “bringing it all together“ workshop, where we summarize the results of the SUMEX regional workshops on permitting, land use planning, health and safety, reporting and socio-economic and environmental impact assessments. This physical event will be held on 17 November 2022 from 9:30 to 12:30 CET in Brussels as part of the EU Raw Materials Week 2022.

Sustainability outside the box: lessons from natural resource projects, architecture and E-learning
The second SUMEX Clustering Workshop with the theme Sustainability outside the box: lessons from natural resource projects, architecture and E-learning, took place online 29 September 2021 and sought to challenge the current thinking around sustainability of the extractives industry by looking at good practices through different non-extractive lenses. In addition, a graphical illustrator recorded the workshop.
Contribute to our capacity building survey!
The SUMEX project is inviting stakeholders involved in the extractives industry (policymakers, permitting authorities, NGOs, etc.) to understand where specific knowledge gaps exist in the field of sustainable extraction. The replies to this survey will allow the SUMEX team to begin to assess what kinds of capacity building – i.e. learning and exchange actions and materials – are needed to fill these gaps. SUMEX will collect these responses for discussion in workshops and to develop a toolkit. These results will be brought into the SUMEX recommendations for future work towards capacity building.

SUMEX is pleased to launch the first edition of its yearly Policy brief where we present a preliminary framework of priorities for sustainable development in relation to the extractive industry.
SUMEX clustering workshop: collecting best practice considerations from European and global partners
The SUMEX project organised its first clustering workshop on 15 and 16 June 2021, gathering representatives from several EU funded projects as well as partners from oversees.
SUMEX toolkit: Everything you ever wanted to know about practices in the extractives sector
One of SUMEX’s main outputs will be the digital toolkit for good practice learning. An online repository about EU extractive sector practices will contain information on industry and policy practice & training materials in the form of reports, videos and websites in a well-structured and user needs centred way.
