SUMEX is pleased to launch the first edition of its yearly Policy brief where we present a preliminary framework of priorities for sustainable development in relation to the extractive industry.
SUMEX considers sustainable management in the extractive industries as the ability of society to use mineral raw materials in a way enhancing human well-being without harming the environment. We use the Planetary Boundaries and Doughnut Economy model as a starting point for our approach regarding sustainability.
The preliminary framework developed by SUMEX is offering the basis for a broad consultation process with stakeholders from civil society, academia, industry and government backgrounds from all across the EU. This consultation will allow the project team to finalise the sustainability framework with the aim of making existing practices in the extractive industries more sustainable.
